My first trimester screen what it says…

So the details on my first trimester screen. The results came back that I am at a high risk than someone well a woman that is over the age of 35. The exact piece of paper says this… The prior for down syndrome based on maternal age and / or family history is 1 in 144. The patients specific risk based on the free bata,papp-a nuchal translucency and family history is 1 in 253 which is greater than a 35 year old gravida’s risk (at patients gestational age) of 1 in 304. The risk of certain other chromosome abnormalities is also increased.
Trisomy 18/13 risk
the prior risk for trisomy 13/18 only based on maternl age alone is 1 in 1,726 The patients specific risk based on the free bata papp-a nuchal translucency family history and maternal age is 1 in 34,501 which is less than the trisomy 18/13 cutoff risk of 1 in 150.
And then at the bottom it just says offer to let the family talk toa genetic counselor and to have an amniocentesis which we declined the amnio. And at the very bottom where it is hand written it says abnormal first trimester based on someones age at 35 but screen actually decreases her age/ downs syndrome risk from 1/144 to 1/253
And that is pretty much it. This is why I get so frustrated with the doctors I just want them to stay up on everythign that is going on and the baby’s development. I assume nothing is wrong until I SEE IT WITH MY OWN EYES OR ON A SONOGRAM. Because tests are sometimes wrong. The people that do them are human. The nurse that drew my blood to the sonogram person tot he genetics lab in north Carolina. We are just praying for a healthy baby neither one of us care about the sex as long as it is a healthy baby.

  1. Oh Gal. With my first full pregnancy and son, we did the triple screen. It’s very inaccurate — The numbers eight years ago were 65-70% accuracy.

My numbers came back at 1 in 154. I freaked. My wonderful OB did her job letting me know that in Texas I had another week or so left to consider abortion. GASP. She was just doing her job.

Hubby and I get home and I freak out again and cry, and yada-yada. An amnio could confirm better numbers and that all way okay — with a 1 in 200 miscarriage. No way.

I told my husband that I’d prayed so hard to have this baby that there was no way I couldn’t keep it. It’d be slapping God in the face and he knows what he is doing.

My son was fine; we had pre-elcampsia and other risk factors together — but he was healthy. With my daughter, I didn’t even take that test.

My secretary at the time told me she had that triple screen with her first son and it came back positive for Downs. He was born perfect and so were the other six children she had.

So, I know your risk factors. But, good for you to not invest your mental state into it but into what you see.

When they did an additional sonogram the tech wouldn’t tell me anything, but I was watching the numbers and had researched before the exam. Nukal (sp) fold was perfect for age and so were a lot of other numbers.

Hang tight Sweetie! Be optimistic…. Be healthy….
