A variety of forces are reshaping the traditional relationship between physicians and their patients. One consequence of this reform movement will be increased responsibility of the pediatrician to evaluate children with surgical diseases. Pediatricians also will be encouraged to do more of the minor surgical procedures themselves. It is not clear how academic pediatric surgeons should adapt to these changes to assure that the general pediatrician is equipped with the skills to handle this increased responsibility. One obvious solution would be to have the pediatrician in training rotate on the pediatric surgery service. The authors have considered these issues at their institution, and thus became interested in learning the status of pediatric surgical rotations by pediatric house staff in this country. A survey was distributed to the 221 accredited pediatric training programs in this country, and 143 individuals responded. Only thirty-five of these programs require a rotation on pediatric surgery. Eighty-six programs offer it as an elective, but only a minority of house staff takes it. The most disturbing aspect of the survey was that 28 of the programs had required a pediatric surgical rotation in the past but had eliminated it. The most common reasons given for this action were the poor educational content of the rotation and the labor requirements of the pediatric service. Based on the survey, the authors believe that it is unlikely that mandatory rotations on pediatric surgery will be begun in pediatric training curriculums. If pediatric surgeons with to be involved in training pediatricians, they will need to address the educational content of their electives to meet the changing educational needs of the pediatricians.

Dr. David A. Rogers! Dr. David Rogers joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an associate professor of surgery. His specialty is pediatric general surgery. He has since been promoted to professor.

Previously, he was on the surgery faculty at Medical College of Georgia (MCG), August, GA (1990-91 and 1994-00).

Rogers earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees at University of South Florida inTampa (1980, 1984). He completed his surgery residency, including a year as a surgery research fellow, at the MCG (1990), a one-year pediatric surgical oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis (1992) and two years of a pediatric surgery residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis (1994). He also completed a one-year surgical education research fellowship with the Association for Surgical Education (1996).

Rogers is certified by the American Board of Surgery with special qualifications in pediatric surgery. He is a fellow of the American College Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society. Rogers has served on the editorial boards of American Surgeon and Pediatric Endosurgery and Innovative Techniques. He has published more than two dozen journal articles and seven book chapters.

Born in Gainesville, Fla., Rogers is married to Dr. Laura Quillan Rogers, an associate professor of internal medicine at SIU, and has two children.

Where do I begin about this man. He is the greatest doctor ever and with out him we may not have our son today and i strongly whole heartily believe that. He has been there for us and for Lucian since day one. I think we started off kind of rocky because just having to turn your son over to someone you don’t even know to let them preform numerous procedures and surgeries on them isn’t exactly the easiest thing we had ever done before but he somehow under stood us and we all came to an understanding and we have grown closer to that man everyday. He is what keeps us going with Lucian he is the only one that understands us and our situation with our son. He is straight forward with us and he knows that we like it that way. We dread when he has to go out of town which has only been once but is about to be twice and we are not looking forward to it at all. His partner is very good as well its just hard to give your baby to someone for them to do a esophageal dilation when the same person has done the last 22 of them or so. All im try in to say is that if i just had a child born with esophageal atresia or any other type of problem where they needed a pediatric surgeon i would choose him in a heart beat and would never refer anyone else. I beg you not to just go letting anyone go cutting on your child to repair them because its just not the right thing to do.When it comes to esophageal repair this man knows what he is doing with out a doubt and when it comes to alot of other things as well. I look so forward to Lucian growing up and developing such a wonderful relationship with doctor rogers, it brings tears to my eyes. It’s so hard for me to go in and every time he is done with Lucian just not to wanna give him a hug because he always makes sure Lucian has the best and i mean the best. He calls and checks on him after dilations and he comes to see us atleast twice a day when were admitted in the hospital. But when it comes to some surgeons which we had our experience with before with our son your lucky if you see them once a week or even after a procedure. It makes a wold of a difference when you get a doctor that truly loves what he does and one that cares deeply for his patients.

Dr. David Rogers is an associate professor in the Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
Dr. Rogers received his medical degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa. He completed his general surgery residency as well as a surgery research fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia. He later completed a Pediatric Surgical Oncology Fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a Pediatric Surgery Residency at the University of Tennessee. He is board certified in general surgery. Dr. Rogers is a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics with a certificate of Special Qualifications in Pediatric Surgery.
Dr. Rogers has co-authored over 30 journal articles and given over 50 presentations and educational courses. His research interests are in surgical education.
Dr. Rogers was born in Gainesville, Florida. He and his wife, Laura, have two sons and reside in Springfield.

More and More Physicians Getting Rounding Data via PDA’s

When David Rogers needed quick results from a blood test for one of his
hospitalized patients in the early 1980s, he had to leave the person’s
bedside and either make a call to the hospital’s laboratory — a call
that often went unanswered — or show up at the lab.

Rogers, a pediatric surgeon at Southern Illinois University
School of Medicine, now whips out a personal digital assistant and he
uses a stylus to touch a few icons on a screen slightly larger than a
credit card.

Dr. David Rogers, a SIU pediatric surgeon, said St. John’s and SIU are making wise moves and that Springfield
families deserve more access to specialty care.
He said adding specialists will be easier once a medical director for the children’s hospital is chosen.
“I think it won’t be hard to recruit people once we have this plan for the future outlined,” Rogers said.
